Quotable: Pillar 02 of the P0 Protocol | Position 0
Pillar 02 of 03 · Quotable

AI quotes you because
what you publish is
worth quoting.

Quotable is the second pillar of the P0 Protocol. Once AI can find your brand, it has to have a reason to cite your content directly in answers. That reason is content depth: original research, expert content, structured answers, and proprietary data published on a domain you own. Brands without it get parsed but never cited.

What Quotable Means

The source AI reaches for first.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Gemini a question in your category, AI assembles an answer by pulling from sources it judges to be authoritative and quotable. That judgment is made on every query. The brands AI quotes most often are the brands AI recommends most often.

Quotable is the work that makes your own domain one of those sources. Original research with numbers nobody else has. Expert content written by a practitioner, not a generalist. Structured answers that AI can lift cleanly into a response. Proprietary data published in the open, with sources and dates attached.

The on-domain rule is what defines this pillar. If the content lives on a URL your brand owns, it counts as Quotable work. If it lives anywhere else, it's a different pillar. Author doesn't matter. Platform does.

Discoverable makes you legible. Credible makes the rest of the web vouch for you. Quotable is the work in the middle, where your own site does the heaviest lifting.

What AI Looks For

The four signals of quotability.

These are the components AI weights when deciding whether your content is worth quoting directly. Two are about the substance of what you publish. Two are about how that substance is structured for citation. All four sit on your own domain.

01 · Substance
Original Research and Proprietary Data

Numbers nobody else has. Survey data, internal benchmarks, sample studies, category trends drawn from your own data set. AI quotes the source of a statistic, and if you're the source, AI quotes you. The work isn't writing more posts. It's producing data that other people then cite, which means AI has to cite you to surface the underlying number.

Survey data Benchmarks Trend reports Studies Data sets
02 · Substance
Expert Depth and POV

Content written by a practitioner who has done the work, not a content team paraphrasing what's already on the web. AI weighs depth and specificity. A page that shows technique, decision frames, and trade-offs gets cited more often than a page that surveys the field. Your point of view is a feature, not a liability.

Practitioner content Decision frames Trade-offs First-person POV
03 · Structure
Structured Answers

AI looks for content it can lift cleanly. Definitions stated in one or two sentences. Comparisons formatted as direct contrasts. How-to instructions in clear ordered sequences. FAQ-formatted answers. The structure is what makes your content extractable as a citation, not just readable as a page.

Definitions Comparisons How-to FAQ Lists
04 · Structure
Citation-Ready Formatting

Article and FAQ schema applied correctly. Clear H2 and H3 hierarchy that maps to the question someone is asking. Source attribution on data. Publish dates and last-updated dates visible. Author bylines where the author's expertise can be verified. The formatting is what tells AI this content is safe to cite.

Where It Shows Up In Your P0 Score

Quotable is worth 40 points.

The P0 Score is a 100-point measurement across three categories. AI Retrievability is worth 40 of those points, equal in weight to AI Discoverability. It splits into Content Coverage and Structure (whether you have the right content in the right format) and Technical Optimization (whether AI can extract that content cleanly from each page).

The free AI Visibility Snapshot scores AI Retrievability as one of three top-line dimensions. The full GEO Audit goes both sub-dimensions deep with written findings on each.

Why Quotable carries equal weight to Discoverable

A discoverable site without quotable content gets parsed but never cited. The two pillars are weighted equally because both have to be in place for AI to surface your brand directly in answers.

How We Install It

The Content action.

Content is the action that installs Quotable. It runs continuously from month two of the Sprint, after Foundation has cleared the technical access path. The work isn't writing more blog posts. It's producing the specific kinds of content AI quotes, on the pages AI is most likely to surface for the prompts your buyers actually ask.

The cadence is paced. Every cycle starts with a query map showing what AI is being asked in your category and what's currently being cited as the answer. That map drives the content roadmap. We produce, ship, schema, and measure each piece against the dimensions that move AI Retrievability.

What Failure Looks Like

How brands fail Quotable.

A site can be perfectly discoverable and still never get quoted. These are the patterns that block citation even when the technical foundation is clean.

Reposted or paraphrased content

The site publishes regularly, but the content surveys what's already on the web. AI has nothing new to extract. It cites the original source, not the brand republishing it. Volume without substance.

No structured answers

The content is well-written long-form. There are no clear definitions, no formatted comparisons, no FAQ-style answers. AI has to work to extract a citation, and it usually picks a different source where the answer is already structured.

No proprietary data or research

The brand has expertise but doesn't publish the underlying numbers. Surveys never run. Internal benchmarks never get cleaned up and shipped. AI quotes the brands that publish the data, even when those brands have less actual expertise.

No POV in the writing

The content reads like a category overview. Generic best practices. Industry summaries. Nothing that says what this practitioner thinks. AI weights specific perspective, and generic content competes against every other generic page in the category.
